If you’re looking for a golf tournament that not only tests the golfers physical game, but also their mental endurance. The historic traditions of the Masters Tournament is what makes it the most prestigious event in all of golf. From the champions dinner, the green jacket, and a lifetime exemption for the winner, the Masters is “a tradition unlike any other.”
Every golfer in the world dreams about one day putting on that green jacket and becoming a part of history. A young boy from Northern Ireland by the name of Rory McIlroy had that dream. From the time he could pick up a golf club, Rory had talent written all over him. He was viewed as the European coming of Tiger Woods and dreamed of conquering golf’s hardest challenge, the Grand Slam.
To achieve the Grand Slam, a golfer must win all of its four major championships. This consists of the U.S. Open, PGA Championship, The Open, and the Masters. This feat has only been accomplished by five other players in history.
In 2011, early on in Rory’s professional career, he was leading the Masters by four shots heading into the final round. Rory fell victim to the pressure of Augusta and tragically lost the lead losing the tournament. He received a lot of backlash after, but then went on to win his first major by dominating the U.S. Open later that summer.
The following year, Rory won his second major by winning the PGA Championship. A few years later in 2014, Rory won the PGA Championship again along with The Open championship. This put him at 4 majors total, but he was still missing the Masters to fulfill his dream of completing the grand slam.
From his last major championship in 2014 to early 2025, Rory went 11 years without winning a major. He had a couple of close calls, but just couldn’t get it done. He was close to winning his 2nd U.S. Open in 2024, but lost to Bryson Dechambeau. After that, Rory had to step away from the game for a while to focus on his mental health, and fans began to question if he would ever win a major championship again.
When Rory entered the 2025 Masters, he had a victory at Pebble Beach and the Players Championship under his belt. He started off hot early in his first round leading the tournament, but disaster struck with two double bogeys in his final four holes leading him to finish even par. Rory didn’t quit though; he shot two six under rounds in a row in the second and third round to have the lead entering the final round.
Early in his final round, Rory lost the lead to rival Dechambeau but grinded his way back into the lead. He began to run away with it until he hit a ball in the legendary Rae’s Creek on hole 13 leading to another double bogey. Another player, fellow European Justin Rose came from the depths of the leaderboard and climbed his way up to eventually tie Rory and force a playoff.
History failed to repeat itself when he hit his approach shot to three feet to birdie the playoff hole winning his first green jacket, thus completing the Grand Slam. From that moment, his dream became a reality. He officially cemented himself amongst golf’s greats.
In 2026, McIlroy entered the Masters as a defending champion. With confidence, Rory dominated the tournament shooting a 67 on Thursday and a 65 on Friday leading him to a six shot lead entering the weekend. He held the biggest lead after 36 holes in Masters history.
Saturday didn’t go according to plan, where a score of 73 surrendered his lead. He would be tied with Cam Young entering Sunday.
The final round presented plenty of drama. Some of golf’s top players such as Scottie Scheffler, Russell Henley and Tyrrel Hatton were all making a final round push. Justin Rose came close again leading at one point, but later lost it when he shot three over on the back nine.
Rory entered the final hole leading by two shots, but sliced his drive way out to the right. It was when McIlroy hit a ridiculous hook shot through the trees into the green side bunker that got him back in play. He ended up with a bogey resulting in him winning the Masters by 1 shot.
McIlroy became only the 4th golfer to win the Masters back to back, etching his name in golf history once again.
In the end this story didn’t just crown a back to back champion, it proved that anyone can overcome adversity through commitment and self belief. All of those traits are just as important as donning the green jacket.
