People often think of “STEM” as simply an acronym, a four letter abbreviation for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. In many schools across the country, it is viewed as an exclusive and baseline curriculum that has been adopted, prioritizing technical subjects while sidelining the arts and humanities. Conversely, at its best, STEM education is not about limiting learning to four subjects, but rather expanding how students think and apply their knowledge.
At Hempfield Area, our STEM program has embraced the broader meaning through the district’s application-based approach known as STEM Literacy. STEM Literacy “asks you to participate in non-routine problem solving, self-management, self-development, and systems approach to thinking,” which applies to almost any career field that students can envision.
Grounded in these principles, Hempfield Area Senior High School is hosting a Junior Professionalism Seminar on February 11, 2026 in the High School Library. This day-long event aims to bring out the strengths that each student in attendance has to offer while preparing them for the expectations of college and future careers. Throughout the duration of the seminar, students will participate in short lectures, small group discussions, and real world activities that introduce professional skills required beyond high school.
During the event, juniors will work closely with members of the STEM Literacy team to set professional goals for their future. Through the creation of a resume and cover letter, students will showcase their best selves, bridging the gap between education and career. At a second session, students will have the opportunity to explore job shadowing opportunities, obtain head shots, and explore pathways, providing them a firsthand exposure to their prospective career paths.
Seniors also have the opportunity to participate in STEM Communications, a semester-long class provided at the high school that allows students to further apply their STEM knowledge and application skills. As the teachers are mainly facilitators of information, the students are able to take control of the production of the class. They will be responsible for the creation and marketing of a single product over the course of the semester, establishing business techniques, self-promotion, and collective collaboration. Prospective seniors look forward to this class as an opportunity to properly market themselves and build on their strengths, moving forward to their graduation.
Students who complete the tasks of both sessions and the accompanying senior year course will receive a STEM pin, promoting their knowledge and capabilities to universities and future employers. The Junior Professionalism Seminar is also directly connected to two scholarship opportunities, further emphasizing its long-term value.
Throughout their high school career, students are expected to master increasingly demanding coursework across a wide range of subjects. While it is important to strive to be a well-rounded student, students are often pushed to meet high expectations without having the opportunity to fully understand where their strongest skills lie.
The Junior Professionalism Seminar aims to encourage students to shift that focus and further polish these skills with intention. By aiding in the development of students’ self-understanding of who they are and where they thrive, the seminar supports more purposeful academic and career planning down the road.
Junior year is a critical turning point, and the Junior Professionalism Seminar provides students with the proper tools to begin thinking like college students and job applicants. Students will leave the experience with a stronger foundation for their life beyond high school, and with that, more confidence in their self direction.
As students prepare to navigate their lives after high school, programs like the Junior Professionalism Seminar play a vital role in helping students bridge the gap between academics and the real world. By emphasizing self-awareness, career readiness, and practical skills, they develop knowledge that extends far beyond the classroom. The STEM Literacy program offered through Hempfield Area reminds students that success after graduation begins with understanding both the challenges ahead and the strengths within.
