Harrold School has been around for decades, first when the building was a junior high and then as a middle school. It recently became a home for all of Hempfield Area’s freshmen. Mrs. Fetterman, one of many beloved teachers in the Harrold Building, is well known for building a community, a light, and home in Harrold. In this way, it is no surprise that she manages Harrold’s Student Store.
The new 9th grade store was opened by Mrs. Fetterman in 2023, and it took a lot to build it up financially. The class of 2027 then started to volunteer to help the store function. They sold items to their peers, restocked, and helped with the school fundraisers. All these combined efforts helped the store run smoothly.
The store has been running for two years, managed by the classes of 27` and 28`. It is completely optional, and all the students have the chance to contribute if they so choose. The students working the store also benefit from the store. They learn financial and social skills, while being kind and cooperative. They interact with peers every day and engage with others with uplifting smiles. Working in the student store also helps with math and calculation skills. Having students work creates a student-centered and welcoming environment.
The student store sells over 75 different items, recently adding frozen and cold items due to the purchase of a fridge and freezer. All the money raised is then returned to the school. It’s used for mystery motivators, classroom supplies, renting inflatables, clubs, and tickets to purchase free items from the store.
While the concept of a store is not new, the atmosphere at Harrold is young and vibrant. It built a joint community for all of our students and staff. It prospers more every day, and its warmth is contagious. It has grown to be an important part of Harrold and will most likely continue to run until the 9th grade moves back to the high school building. Next time someone is craving a snack or a hospitable environment, he or she can stop by our fantastic store.
