“Yikes,” said Dr. Mark Holtzman when he was asked to define himself in a single statement, “I’m going to need more than one sentence.”
In the interview with Hempfield Area’s new superintendent, Dr. Holtzman, he eagerly states that he doesn’t want to be identified as merely “The Superintendent” but rather as an authentic person, a father, an educator, a leader, and a man who intends to move our district towards a successful future.
His self description rang true as he entailed his vast array of experiences in life and in education. Interviewing Dr. Holtzman was a pleasant experience as he told lighthearted stories, expressed passionate goals, and lovingly spoke about his best friend, his pet dog, Creed.
Holtzman was officially named the new superintendent on July 1st of this year, and right away, he began to think of ways that he could not only move along the high school reconstruction project but also develop a more positive connotation for Hempfield Area.
He did not expect to enter this role; some could call it fate. “It just kind of fell in my lap,” he says as he tells the interesting story of how this job came to be. Holtzman had connected with an old friend for lunch and was surprised to learn of the position. After interviewing alongside 15 educators, he believes his vulnerability and authenticity allowed him to stand out. “It’s hard to be vulnerable. It sometimes allows you to connect. It breaks down the barriers. It changes the perspective a little bit.” Holtzman believes his professional experience coupled with his role at home, make him the best candidate for Hempfield Area.
One thing Holtzman was adamant about was highlighting the positivity in our district. He is persistent and always thinking about ways we can flush out negativity even considering allowing students to engage in this mission. Being present and being engaged plays a big role in how we as students can represent our school, and Holtzman has already begun to model this engagement for us all. He was present at all nine buildings on day one, meeting with high school grade levels shortly after, and even making time for this interview. He says, “We have to do better with telling our story. We have to create excitement and school spirit.” He encourages students to get involved with programs and enthusiastically participate in upcoming events.
It quickly became clear that Dr. Holtzman couldn’t describe himself in one sentence because he was not focused on just one but rather every aspect of Hempfield Area. Holtzman does not have a one track mind; he approaches a situation ready for anything and embraces the diversity of Hempfield Areas programs; from band to athletics to academics, clubs and activities, and even journalism, he is excited to support Hempfield Area students.
Our meager attempt to capture the vivaciousness of Holtzman in this single article gives rise to his own response, “Yikes.” That said, The Royal introduces our new and riveting superintendent, Dr. Mark Holtzman, a man who is certainly defined by more than a sentence.
