In a recent math competition, our Hempfield Area student competitors thrived, taking home two of the top three spots. A group of 15 Hempfield Area students competed at a CalcuSolve competition at Franklin Regional High School on February 7th.
CalcuSolve is a mathematics contest with individual and five person team competitions. To earn points, students must answer a total of ten questions. Nine are answered individually, and one is answered as a team. To earn points, students must answer the questions correctly within a five minute time limit, earning them five points. If a student needs a hint, the individual or team is granted an extra three minutes; however, only a maximum of three points can be earned.
At the most recent event, Senior Peyton Legg out performed 45 other students from five different high schools to take home the first place finish. Legg has dominated the CalcuSolve competition for three years now, placing first as just a sophomore and third as a junior.
This year, Legg came back with a vengeance and took back his first place title. Legg’s mindset was that he “had to do better than last year.” His determination led him to answering all nine of his individual questions correctly without using a single hint. With his team placing second, it boosted his score as well, allowing him to win overall.
Legg is one of the top five students in the 2025 Senior class and plans to continue his mathematical excellence in college and beyond, where he plans to major in mathematics. His incredible abilities earned him the nickname “The MJ of Math” granted by Mr. Stauffer.
Peyton’s younger brother, Braydon Legg, also tied for third place along with Joseph Lucchetti. Congratulations to all three of these Spartans on this mathematical achievement.
