Preparing For The Future

Autistic support students learn skills for life beyond high school

For most of us, the second period is just another class spent in a classroom. For others, it’s a testing ground and training for life after school. This new program provides students with opportunities to practice the soft skills necessary for competitive employment after graduating from Hempfield.

The learning support students, under the guidance of Amanda Murray, look forward to this period spent in the cafeteria kitchen everyday as they learn essential skills for their future life. There, they learn skills such as organization, cleanliness, how to prepare dishes, socialization, and much more!

Soft skills consist of working together as a team, having good hygiene, including wearing the correct uniform and following safety rules, and even taking constructive criticism. Mrs. Murray explains that she hopes “this experience will lead to more opportunities for the students.”

To cafeteria staff member, Mrs. LaGina, working with these students is a special opportunity, “it is an honor to be able to work with these students.”
