Months in Advance

Although the Westmoreland Interscholastic Reading Competition (WIRC) is over 3 months away, students are already hard at work preparing for it. Every other week they meet to discuss books for the competition. This year’s list of books ranges from a few graphic novels to mysteries to historical fiction.

The competition, just like in years past, is at Seton Hill on Monday, March 4. To prepare for the competition, the students have to read books and write questions about them. WIRC Students repeatedly review the questions, ensuring that they know each book inside and out before the competition. Junior Jordyn Corona comments, “I think preparing months in advance is really going to help us out this year.”

There is a much smaller number of participants this year since the competition occurs on the same week of the band trip. Mrs. Owens is hopeful for the future, as the students in band “tend to come back the following year as long as they can compete.” That said, the 9 students representing Hempfield Area are a group of dedicated individuals who are sure to achieve.
