At Hempfield Area High School, student Lucas James is known not only for his involvement in the school’s band program, but also for the resilience he has shown through a years-long battle with cancer.
James was first diagnosed in sixth grade, beginning a journey that would challenge him physically, emotionally, and academically. Although his initial treatment was successful, he relapsed in eighth grade, requiring more care. This phase of treatment included radiation and ultimately, a stem cell transplant, an experience that would become one of the most defining moments of his life.
During treatment, James faced medical precautions due to his compromised immune system. One of the most difficult adjustments was adhering to a restricted diet. Because even small amounts of bacteria could interfere with the success of the transplant, he was unable to eat most foods from outside sources. Items that are typically considered safe became off-limits, leaving him with limited options. Bananas, for example, were one of the few foods he could eat because their protective peel reduced the risk of contamination.
A key turning point in James’s treatment was finding a compatible donor. That match came from Patrick Shoemay, an athlete who plays for the San Diego Seals and is originally from Canada. Shoemay had previously registered as a donor and completed a routine swab, which ultimately identified him as a match. After a separate hospital visit following an accident that luckily did not derail the treatment, the donation process officially began.
Due to medical privacy regulations, the two were not immediately able to communicate. For a period of time, James underwent treatment without knowing the identity of the person who had made his transplant possible. Eventually, however, arrangements were made for the two to meet.
Their first meeting took place during a cancer awareness night at a Bolts game, creating a memorable and emotional setting for both individuals. James recalled feeling nervous as the moment approached. He stood by the glass as the event unfolded, and when the cameras turned on, he waved immediately. The interaction, though brief, carried significant meaning. For the James family, the moment was overwhelming—his mother was brought to tears as she witnessed her son meet the person who had played such a crucial role in saving his life.
While the transplant marked a major step forward, the recovery process remains challenging. James described the most difficult aspects of his journey as the physical pain, particularly during routine dressing changes, as well as the continued dietary restrictions. After the transplant, he had to carefully reintroduce foods one at a time, ensuring his body could tolerate them without complications.
In addition to the physical toll, cancer treatment also disrupted James education. During his relapse, he was unable to attend school in person and initially could not participate in formal schooling, relying on Edgenuity. Over time, a teacher began visiting his home, allowing him to continue his studies somewhat in person. This period of isolation made a lasting impact. He has now returned to in-person learning at the high school, something he was very much looking forward to.
Despite everything he has endured, Lucas has remained connected to his interests and school community. He is an active member of the band, where he plays the trumpet, and he also participates in the marching band. These activities have provided a sense of motivation.
Reflecting on his experience, James emphasized the importance of perseverance. He said his journey has taught him that no matter how difficult a situation may seem, it is possible to get through it. He also mentioned that his dog was by his side during this time, providing comfort and companionship. He offered advice for others facing similar challenges, encouraging them to find ways to stay entertained and keep their minds occupied during long periods of treatment.
As he continues his journey, James is approaching an important milestone. Once he no longer requires infusions, he will have the opportunity to ring the bell—a symbolic moment recognized by many cancer patients to mark the end of treatment.
For James, that moment will represent not just the conclusion of a difficult chapter, but the strength and determination that carried him through it.
