With this year’s bowling season well underway, the Hempfield Area Girls Bowling Team has had no shortage of success prior to their post-season tournaments.
In their section, the current 10 time champions have only recorded one loss this season against the Greater Latrobe Girls Bowling Team. On February 4th, our Lady Spartan bowlers will face off against Latrobe’s Wildcats once more to battle for the section title.
While last year’s section campaign for the Lady Spartans was much more relaxed, enjoying a comfortable undefeated season, this year the team faced a few ups and downs. The team is certainly rebuilding for the future as 4 of the 8 bowlers on the team will be graduating at the end of this school year. However, with patience and trust from both teammates and girls coach Chris Bensur, our developing bowlers have shown great progress and worked hard to take the next step up. Credit goes out to all bowlers as each one of the girls have had to be able to compete at such a high level!
Outside of the regular season matches, the team has already participated in quite a few tournaments in preparation for WPIBL’s, Regionals, and States. On January 3rd, the Lady Spartan bowlers participated in the 2026 St. Vincent Bearcat Challenge. Senior Ashley Bensur was named the tournament MVP for her individual performance at the tournament, and the girls team finished with a 2nd place achievement.
At the WCCA Westmoreland County Championship, the Lady Spartans won the title for a 3rd straight year! Ashley Bensur won her 2nd consecutive County Championship title for individuals. To add on, Amelia Droste (senior) placed 2nd and Clara Carmichael (junior) placed 3rd. A complete sweep for the girls both with their team and individually!
As the regular season nears its end, the team hopes to take home many accomplishments in the post-season championships. This includes 1st place titles for the WPIBL, Western PA Regionals, and they want to defend their title as the PA Girls State Champions. With the amount of hard work, talent, and effort these girls have put into the season, anything is achievable for them!
