For many, Thanksgiving morning is filled with the scent of food and baked goods lingering through the house. But for others, they start the morning off with a 5K run in downtown Greensburg. Senior Stella Bossert has participated in the run with her family for 4 years. She says, “it’s such a fun family bonding time on Thanksgiving morning, and it’s fun to do as a community.”
Combining fitness, family, and fun before a feast, the 34th annual Greensburg Thanksgiving Turkey Trot will be hosted on Thursday, November 27 at 9 am. In giving back to others, proceeds go to YWCA Westmoreland County, Greensburg Fire Department, and the Humane Society of Westmoreland County.
Many Hempfield students partake in this race, including several members of the cross country team. Senior Chesnee Smith expresses her excitement for this year’s race as one last run with her teammates: “It’s one of my last chances to run with my teammates in a 5k, and I get to run with alumni too.”
As each person crosses the finish line, walkers and runners alike, the sense of community is something to be grateful for. When the people of Greensburg come together on a day of gratitude, their spirit is the perfect way to kick off holiday celebrations.
