Dedication Beyond the Target
Focused on the Firing Line

As the season continues, the Hempfield Area High School Rifle Team is doing more than just competing for scores — they are shooting with purpose. This season is especially meaningful because it is the final year for the team’s longtime head coach, making every practice and match feel more important.

For many years, the Hempfield Area Rifle Team has been built on focus and consistency. These values have been taught by a coach who has spent countless hours helping students grow, not only as shooters but as confident and disciplined individuals. The team understands that rifle is a sport that requires patience and control, where success depends just as much on mental strength as physical skill.

Senior varsity shooter Mackenzie Thomas explains that rifle is a unique challenge. “Rifle is different from any other sport I have experienced,” she said. “I joined the team not fully know

ing what to expect, but eager to challenge myself. I quickly learned that rifle is nine times out of ten a competition against your own mind.” She also shared a quote from head coach Jason Wilkinson: “It is 90% a mental game and 10% physical.” This mindset is what continues to motivate her.

That mental strength was tested during last season’s competitions. The team won the Section III Championship and finished as WPIAL Runner-Ups by just one point. They later placed second at the PIAA State Competition. These experiences showed the importance of staying focused, trusting the process, and performing under pressure.

While competition is important, the friendships built on the team matter just as much. Shooter Drew Ronald shared why he joined the rifle team saying, “I joined because I saw how much my older brother Hunter enjoyed it, and I’ve always liked shooting sports.” He further elaborated saying, “It’s a fun group of friends and teammates.” That strong sense of teamwork is clear both on and off the range.

Practices are intense but supportive. Shooters work hard to improve their form, stay calm, and sharpen their focus. The coach often adds mental challenges during practice to prepare athletes for competition and help determine varsity shooters. Since the top eight scores count toward the team total, every shot truly matters.

The coach’s impact goes beyond technique. He has created a program built on responsibility, effort, and respect. As the season continues, the team reflects on what it means to be part of such a strong tradition. Each match becomes a way to show appreciation for their coach through hard work and dedication.

As the Hempfield Area Rifle Team moves forward this season, their goal remains the same: support one another and give their best effort every time they step onto the range. In a sport where success comes down to tiny details, motivation and teamwork make all the difference, and this season will be one they remember for years to come.
