After last year’s boys tennis team graduated entirely, the future of the program seemed uncertain. With no returning players and no experience, Coach Stas wasn’t sure if there would even be a team this season. But thanks to her determination and a group of willing students, Hempfield Area boys tennis team is back, brand new, and ready to compete.
Most of this year’s players had little to no experience when they joined. Coach Stas recruited during lunch, encouraged students to try something new, and it worked. “If you’re willing to try, I’m willing to coach you,” she told students.
Senior Mitchell Demoise said, “Coach Stas came to talk with us at lunch and convinced me and a bunch of my friends to join.” The team was formed just in time, bringing together classmates with an open mind and a shared goal of growth.
Many players are discovering the sport as they go. “The learning process has been really fun,” said senior Nickolas Klavon. “I feel like I have really grown as a player.” For others, the biggest challenge has been adjusting to competitive play.
“The hardest part is adapting to playing better competition,” Mitchell added. Still, their process is steady and spirits are high.
Despite their inexperience, the team is focused on improvement and teamwork. “My goal is to be better than myself every single day,” Nick said.
Lucas Herrod shared that “everyone’s goal this season is to get a win,” while Aidan White said, “my goals are to actually win something this year.” But whether they win or lose, the players support each other, keep the energy fun, and “hype each other up,” according to Lucas.
Every player praised Coach Stas for her support and dedication, “She is extremely supportive, caring, and overall wants us to succeed not just as players, but as young men,” Nick said.
Others mentioned how she’s been helping them with footwork, form, and the confidence to improve. Aidan noted, “She has helped by showing how to play better and sharing insight on how to serve and foot placement to hit.”
Reflecting on this season, Coach Stas said, “This has been one of the best experiences of my career. They have learned and grown so much.” Hempfield Area boys tennis team may be new, but their passion, energy, and team bond make them one to watch. This season isn’t just about wins it’s about learning, improving, and enjoying the journey together. With Coach Stas leading the way, the team is proving that sometimes starting from scratch just means building something special.
