Who needs Jimi Hendrix when you’ve got Maylee Rodeheaver? This is a question that many Hempfield Area students were asking on Friday, February 14 as the cords of our Star Spangled Banner rang out in the Hempfield Area Field House to start our Winter Pep Rally.
However, this musical number was just the beginning of another stellar production instituted by National Honor Society and Mrs. Fetterman.
From the acknowledgment of our winter athletes, Boys and Girls’ Wrestling, Gymnastics, Unified Bocce, Rifle, Boys and Girls’ Basketball, Indoor Track, Swimming and Diving, Hockey, Competitive Cheer, Majorettes, and Bowling, the rhythmic tapping of our drum line, and performances by the cheerleaders, NHS showcased all that these cold months have to offer.
Most noteworthy were the final two events of the rally. “3-2-1,” cried Addie Busch before 426 students chucked their ducks to the center target all to raise money for pediatric cancer via Hempfield Area Mini-THON. The schoolwide support for this endeavor was heartwarming and demonstrated a collective drive to do something bigger together than we could do alone.
Finally, the Unified Bocce Team took the floor to showcase their skills. Playing live in front of their classmates might have seemed intimidating at first, but the team did not falter for a minute competing against staff to the best of their abilities.
In a district as large as ours, there are few moments when the entire student body gets to come together in celebration. And with the extra pep from NHS, we are sure these moments are ones we will always remember.
