As they prepare to step into adulthood, future teachers are facing one of the biggest transitions of their lives: becoming full-time educators. Right now, they’re wrapping up their studies and getting ready to lead classrooms of their own.
Although these future teachers come from different backgrounds, they share a common goal: to inspire the next generation. Ms. Mena, who is with Mr. Wentzel, and Mr. Whitten, who is student teaching with both Mrs. Kertoy and Mrs. Trabucco, are already on their way.
Ms. Mena is currently studying secondary education with a focus on English at Slippery Rock University, while Mr. Whitten is pursuing secondary education and special education at Point Park University. Both are eager to apply what they’ve learned and make an impact in the classroom.
Reflecting on her journey, Ms. Mena shared, “My college experience was really good. Having really helpful and caring professors helps. The education-based classes helped me because I use all of that today.” Her positive experience, guided by supportive professors, has laid the foundation for her as a future educator.
Mr. Whitten has similar enthusiasm for his experience, saying, “It has been wonderful. The students are all really active, so I really get to engage with super engaging students.” His time working with students has prepared him to be in a classroom.
Becoming a teacher is more than just teaching; it’s about learning how to connect with students, manage a classroom, and inspire curiosity. Both Mena and Whitten have been working hard to develop these skills through hands-on experiences.
“I was nervous about this transition, but I did a pre-field experience at New Castle last fall, so that prepared me for this,” said Mena. Her early experiences in the classroom have helped her feel ready to take the next step.
For these aspiring educators, graduation represents more than the end of their education—it’s the start of their adult lives and careers. As they prepare to transition from students to teachers, they are excited to take on the responsibilities of being a teacher.
“I’m definitely looking forward to managing my own classroom, and I can’t wait to make my mark on the high school,” said Whitten, expressing his excitement for the future.
With graduation fast approaching, both Mena and Whitten are ready to step into their roles as teachers. It’s the final step on their journey to adulthood, and they’re eager to embrace the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
