Across Central America, art is more than just a decoration or entertainment — it is a living expression of history, resilience, and identity. Whether it is vibrant textiles, earthy ceramics, or abstract murals, Central American artists work tirelessly to preserve their cultural heritage through their creations.
However, with inconsistent income and lack of institutional support, hundreds of artists across Central America struggle to support themselves and their families. They often work multiple jobs, face frequent rejection, and lack international recognition.
With this, It becomes increasingly important that we help these artists to keep their culture and legacy alive. Taking time to support them is not just about funding their creative projects; it is about protecting their cultural identity, strengthening their local economies, and amplifying voices that might otherwise go unheard.

The Pulsera Project, a service program founded in 2009 to encourage the distribution and education of Central American artists’ creations. This project encourages students in the United States to learn about the lives of artisans in Nicaragua and Guatemala while raising financial support for them and their families. By spreading awareness, the Pulsera Project allows for these artists to establish an international legacy where they can share their stories and rich culture with the rest of the world.
The Pulsera Project provides education, employment, and community support through its distribution of handcrafted purses and bracelets. Their mission is to make the world a more colorful and just place by educating and empowering Central American communities and U.S. students.
At Hempfield Area High School, students in the Spanish Honor Society and Global Scholars will be participating in this service activity. They will be selling handmade bracelets and purses during homeroom and lunch periods throughout the weeks of February 16th and February 23rd. Bracelets will be sold for $5 and purses will be sold for $15. If you would like to make a contribution without getting a bracelet, donations can be made. All proceeds will be given back to the artists and their families.
With Hempfield Area’s involvement in this project, we are able to make a difference in the lives of hundreds of Central American artists. Individuals are encouraged to take a moment to browse the unique and colorful bracelets that are being sold these next two weeks. Your donations are sure to strengthen local economies in Nicaragua and Guatemala.
