Scoring a starting position on the Hempfield Area softball team is not easy. The team’s record speaks for itself attracting a lot of competitive players who work very hard for their positions.
Morgan Walt is one such player. She says, “I can count on one hand how many practices and conditionings I’ve missed since my freshman year. Believe it or not, every single practice or conditioning, you’re are getting watched and evaluated by the coaches. These evaluations will ultimately decide whether you play or not.” The sport alone takes a lot of commitment, but wanting a playing position on a team takes full dedication.
After 4 years, Walt has earned her starting position for her senior year. Walt plays in the outfield and now starts as a right fielder. She plays center field for her travel team and was positive she could benefit the team in the outfield. Although her starting position is extremely rewarding to her, it only means training even harder to make sure she keeps it.
Walt says, “The feeling of finally being able to say that I have a starting spot feels unbelievably accomplishing. To earn a starting spot for Hempfield Area Softball is relieving, but the work can’t stop there. There’s multiple back ups and relievers waiting their turn every game to get put in your spot. Once you are a starter, you almost have to work even harder to keep it, because the people behind you are working just as hard. One error or a few bad games could cost you that starting spot.”
Her hard work has definitely paid off throughout the years and shows how resilient and driven she is as a player. Walt has committed to Waynesburg University to be a pitcher/outfielder for their softball team. She is going to greatly impact the team and give her all to them using the lessons and skills she has learned from Hempfield in the past years.
