
Whether it’s to learn the periodic table, complete a lab experiment, or show your pass in the hall, it seems that everyone knows Mr. Kudrick. After 32 years of shaping young minds and inspiring students at Hempfield Area High School, he has decided to hang up his lab coat.
Mr. Kudrick began his career at Hempfield Area over 3 decades ago, and it is clear that the love he has for teaching is unwavering. When asked how long he has worked at Hempfield Area, he proudly replies, “32 years”. Through that time, he has taught a variety of classes including Chemistry, Honors Chemistry, Physical Science, and Physical Science 2. His way of teaching and dedication to his students earns him a reputation as a teacher who truly cares about making difficult concepts understandable.
While many teachers have favorite grade levels or subjects, Mr. Kudrick enjoys each one. When asked about which class was his favorite to teach, he smiled and shared, “I really have liked them all. A lot of people will disparage one class or another, but I like them all.” Whether he is introducing the fundamentals of physical science or diving deep into advanced chemistry concepts, his passion for chemistry did not go unnoticed and was evident in each class that he taught.
As Mr. Kudrick reflects on his time at the high school, he shares that his favorite memory isn’t a specific moment or event, it’s “the wonderful students” he says, emphasizing that while many retiring teachers will mention the staff, for him, it has been the students who have made the biggest impact. Through countless classes and years of teaching, Mr. Kudrick has watched many students grow and succeed.
What Mr. Kudrick will miss the most about Hempfield Area is “The level of student energy and activity that happens.” He further explains, “There’s always 100 things going on around here.” Whether that be a science experiment or a school wide event, the dynamic atmosphere of Hempfield Area is something that he will carry with him into retirement.
Once retired, Mr. Kudrick plans to spend and enjoy more of his time outdoors, hiking, gardening, and of course, spending quality time with his family. It’s clear that after a long career of giving, he looks forward to taking time to recharge and enjoy the smaller things in life.
Chemistry is a very challenging subject for many students, and Mr. Kudrick offers some words of wisdom to those who will follow in his footsteps, “Keep up every day, don’t fall behind, and definitely ask questions”. With his insight and experience, it is clear that these simple yet effective tips reflect his approach to teaching: communication and consistency are key.
As Mr. Kudrick enters retirement, Hempfield Area High School will surely miss his dedication and positive influence upon the students. We are thankful to have had the privilege of learning from him. Congratulations on your retirement, Mr. Kudrick, and thank you for 32 years of service for all of us.
